Marine Flexible Propeller Shaft Couplings- R & D
Flexible Propeller Shaft Couplings absorb shock and protect your driveline and absorb vibrations and compensates for some misalignment. These Flexible couplings can withstand saltwater and harsh chemicals and are easy to install, your boat can stay in the water and can be used in industrial applications.Headland Engineering is authorised distributor of these marine products direct in Australia.R & D Marine has developed a wide range of competitively priced Flexible shaft Couplings to fit all major installations on boats and marine applications and is mounted between gear box flange and propeller shaft flange and acts as a damper. The R & D marine Flexible prop shaft Couplings reduce engine noise, vibration transmission and are designed to accept propeller thrust, a separate thrust bearing and bulkhead are not required.
  • The boat shaft couplings are made from a polyester elastomer which is not affected by salt water, diesel and lubrication fluids.
  • If electrical continuity is required, an earthing connector can be fitted in the centre of most boat and marine prop shaft flexible Couplings.
  • Installation is quick and easy for the propeller shaft coupling as the R & D Coupling requires no machining and comes supplied with bolts to connect between the two existing shaft flanges.
  • The boat flexible coupling can be easily adjusted and checked for alignment on installation and during service checks is quick and easy using the red cone headed bolt.
  • The marine propeller shaft couplings are available ex-stock and worldwide through distribution network.

R & D Marine flexible disc transmission couplings provide a damper between the gearbox and propeller shaft to isolate torsional vibration from the engine and gearbox. The high precision flexible couplings provide the softest element in the shaft assembly to improve performance and provide a sacrificial link that is designed to fail before gearbox damage occurs. These boat propeller shaft couplings are designed to cover a large percentage of gearboxes, such as Twin Disc, ZF, Dong-I, Borg Warner, Bukh, Newage, Paragon, Technodrive, Volvo, Yanmar and many more.Available with BUREAU VERITAS & LLOYDS REGISTER of shipping approval for select couplings as per brochure and are designed for marine use, these couplings are used in many industrial driveline applications too.
Flexible Coupling Information: The R&D 910 Series couplings are made of a flexible, curved disc that is moulded in a new, durable polyester elastomer. When the boat structure flexes or the engine moves on its rubber vibration isolation mountings, the contoured disc can freely flex to correct any temporary misalignment of the engine and shaft. It also provides clearance for bolt heads. The disc between the two half couplings receives forward thrust in compression, and the disc between the two failsafe straps receives reverse thrust in compression. The steel straps ensure that the drive is maintained in both forward and backward and make the coupling fail safe in the unlikely case of a disc failure. Although couplings are normally non-conductive, if necessary, we may provide a rubber element impregnated with silver to fit in the middle of the coupling between the two failsafe straps to provide continuity. INSTALLATION PROCEDURE FOR R & D MARINE COUPLINGS
1. Roughly align engine and stern gear without flexible coupling i.e. only two rigid half couplings pushed together.2. Bolt “R & D Marine” coupling between the two rigid couplings. Tightening details as below.
3. Check alignment of engine by placing feeler gauges between the RED CONE HEADED BOLT and the rigid half coupling. Repeat for the SAME bolt at 90° intervals by rotating the shaft.4. If the gap is the same in all four positions, the engine is accurately aligned. Recommended minimum to maximum gap difference: 0.25 mm / .010 inch. 5. Run installation to bring engine compartment to working temperature. Re-check torque settings.
Recommended tightening torque:
  • M8 - 27 Nm 20 lbsft
  • 3/8 UNF - 40 Nm 30 lbsft
  • M10 - 54 Nm 40 lbsft
  • 7/16 UNF - 81 Nm 60 lbsft
  • M12 - 108 Nm 80 lbsft
  • 1/2 UNF - 100 Nm 75 lbsft
  • 5/8 UNF - 210 Nm 155 lbsft
  • M18 - 338 Nm 250 lbsft
  • 3/4 UNF - 366 Nm 270 lbsft
COUPLING SELECTION GUIDE
Data Required for Selection of Flexible Coupling:
  • Horsepower (H.P.) of Engine
  • RPM/ Speed of Engine
  • Reduction Ratio of the Gear Box
  • No of bolt holes on the gear box flange
  • Outer diameter of Gear Box flange
  • Size of holes on Gear box flange
  • PCD or the distance between opposite holes on Gear Box flange
  • Gear Box model no. can help in confirming fitment of the flexible Coupling.

The R & D 910 Series couplings consist of a contoured flexible disc moulded in tough yet resilient new type Polyester Elastomer. The contoured disc gives clearance for bolt heads and is able to flex freely to take up any temporary misalignment of the engine and shaft, due to flexing of the boat structure or the engine moving on its rubber vibration isolation mountings. Forward thrust is taken in compression on the disc between the two half couplings and reverse thrust is taken again in compression on the disc between the two fail safe straps. In the unlikely event of a disc failure, the steel straps make the coupling fail safe and ensure drive is maintained in both forward and reverse.

ADVANTAGES OF R & D MARINE FLEXIBLE COUPLINGSThe polyurethane disc is backed up by two metal compression straps, one on either side of the flexible coupling. These metal straps hold the system in constant compression whether the drivetrain is in forward or reverse. This feature extends the life of the system dramatically.The R & D Marine Flexible Coupling will also absorb shock loads resulting from gear changes, or the propeller striking a submerged object. The polyurethane disk will distort with light shock loads and is designed to be sacrificial in the event of severe shock load, saving on expensive drivetrain repairs. If the disc is destroyed from massive shock load the metal compression straps keep the coupling intact ensuring that the drive system is functional in both forward and reverse.
